Industry-academia collaborative research is promoted based on these core themes together with participating companies.
Designing Built Environments that Naturally Promote Health
The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare introduced the key concept of “creating environments that naturally promote health” in Health Japan 21 (the Third Term) to achieve inclusive health promotion that leaves no one behind. In this project, we integrate expertise from architecture with medical knowledge to explore how to create built environments that naturally promote health.

Co-designing Scenarios for Preferable Future Living and Communities
This theme aims to co-design scenarios and backcast actions for a preferred 2050 where diverse stakeholders live authentically. By integrating Living Labs with Design Futuring, the project seeks to establish a design methodology that empowers participants to perceive social issues as Jibungoto and to augment their creativity, thereby driving transitions to address societal problems.

Detailed Observation of Cities and Regions, Understanding Interaction of Economy and Transportation
Using statistical and people-flow data, we will observe cities and regions to measure liveability, quality of life, and social interaction. Spatial economic analysis will clarify interaction of transport accessibility and economic activity, assess impacts of road improvements and population distribution, and guide regional policy.

Building a Circular Economy through Value Re-Creation of Construction and Demolition Materials
Society is shifting from construction and maintenance to regeneration. Although 99.5% of concrete is recycled, most is downcycled into roadbed material, and closed-loop recycling remains limited. Rather than improving recycled materials themselves, we combine them with other materials to achieve sufficient performance while reducing energy use and promoting their active adoption to realize low-energy circular concrete.

The Transition Scenarios to a Circular Economy
The transition to a circular economy has the potential to bring about structural changes across the entire economy. We will study transition scenarios and policies for the circular economy through model analyses using Dynamic Material Flow Analysis (dMFA)—which analyzes material flows from raw material procurement through manufacturing, recovery, and recycling—and Agent-Based Modeling (ABM), which examines the formation of cooperative norms for the circular economy from the perspective of individual decision-making.

Leveraging Satellite Data and Digital Twin Technology for Value Creation in the Tokyo Waterfront
This project aims to develop a Digital Twin of Tokyo Bay, based on satellite remote sensing and numerical simulation, to serve as a multi-layered data platform for revitalizing the Tokyo Waterfront. The Digital Twin will be equipped with functions for visualizing and monitoring infrastructure, ocean currents and waves, water quality, red tide and blue tide, and disaster forecasting.
