Social Infrastructure Studies
for a Sustainable Society

The challenges facing society are becoming more and more complex including global environmental problems, the need to prepare for increasingly destructive natural disasters, to preserve biodiversity, and balance global economic activities with local history, culture, and lifestyles. As lifespans approach 100 years in Japan, the very form of society is being transformed.

Humans are facing great changes never before experienced. Therefore, we believe that now is the time to consider deeply the impact on people’s thinking and actions, how it will be possible to achieve a sustainable society, and how it will be possible to build cities and social infrastructure for supporting society.

In addition to the diverse “knowledge” of Science Tokyo, this program integrates the various “knowledge” of participating companies and the broader “knowledge” of society. With a long-term perspective, it works to clarify transformations in people and society, discover ideal concepts of cities and social infrastructure, and identify the challenges for accomplishing these.
